I have been photographing at baseball games since my 16-year-old son, Peter, started playing Little League ten years ago. As a result of my status as a spectator and mother, I only had the opportunity to photograph my son and his teammates playing baseball from the stands and through fences. In the spring of 2015, Coach Cardoza, the head baseball coach for Decatur High School, invited me to become an embedded photographer for the baseball teams. What mother and photographer wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to hang out with the players and coaches in the dugout during the baseball games? It was an opportunity to witness what a spectator was unable to observe from the stands and to capture authentic moments that were fleeting and concealed from public view. This partnership between myself and the Decatur High School baseball teams resulted in the creation of this project, The Dugout. —Beate Sass
Bio
Beate Sass was born in 1960 in Boston, Massachusetts. She received a Bachelors in Music from the University of Southern California in 1983 and a Certificate in Physical Therapy from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1989. Beate discovered the joys of photographing eleven years ago when she purchased her first digital camera. “Photography is an extension of who I am and defines me as a person. It is not only a passion but a necessity.” She is predominantly self-taught but has attended workshops led by eminent photographers whose work she admires. Beate lives in Decatur, Georgia. She works part-time as a physical therapist, specializing in adult orthopedics.
