I made these still lifes during the summer of 2004. I was 33 years old. I made a still life for each week of the summer. Each still life was a collision of flowers and weeds found on the side of the street, gathered after a dinner party or chosen from the yards of strangers. I waited until the blooms and leaves were appropriately wilted. I photographed them just as they were beginning to wane and lose their vitality.
Angela West
Biography
Angela West was born in Dahlonega, Georgia. She received her BFA from the University of Georgia and her MFA from Yale University. Her projects include portrait studies of small-town teenage girls, landscapes of familiar neighborhoods, and luminous still lifes. In each genre her richly realized color photographs balance affection for her subjects with precise and unsentimental observation.
Ms. West’s work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, The Ogden Museum, New Orleans, and The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
Ms. West lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and is represented by Jackson Fine Art.
